The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has launched a mobile app and a free Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) platform to reduce queues and improve accessibility for its clients. The launch of the zero-rated platforms took place on September 4, 2023, and allows clients to access UIF services at no cost and from any location.
The introduction of the mobile app and USSD platform is aimed at enhancing self-service for clients, alleviating pressure on labor center officials, and shortening queues. The Commissioner of UIF, Teboho Maruping, believes that the new platforms will save clients time and money they would have otherwise spent on transportation to labor centers.
To access the new platforms, clients can dial 134843# on their cellular phones or download the mobile app from Google Play Store, App Store for iOS, or Huawei App Store. With the new platforms, clients can submit payment continuations, check their claim and payment status, and verify their UIF registration status.
The verification of UIF registration status is essential in promoting compliance with the Unemployment Insurance Act. The USSD platform allows clients to detect employers who fail to register, declare, or pay contributions. It is vital for contributing workers to check their registration status while they are still employed and report any discrepancies to labor inspectors immediately.
The UIF is committed to improving service delivery by implementing innovative measures. To support the launch of the new platforms, the UIF will conduct roadshows in all provinces to educate clients and launch a mass media campaign. Other recent initiatives include the installation of free Wi-Fi in labor centers and the deployment of mobile buses to provide services to clients in rural and remote areas.
In conclusion, the introduction of a mobile app and USSD platform by the UIF marks a significant step toward digitizing and streamlining its services. By making their services more accessible and convenient, the UIF is embracing the power of technology and demonstrating its commitment to improving the lives of its clients.
