A Century of Culture: Langa Township Celebrates its Centenary with Art and Community

Located in the heart of the Western Cape, Langa Township has a rich history, culture, and socio-economic significance. This year marks Langa’s 100th anniversary, and the community has come together to celebrate this significant milestone through a series of events.

A Three-Day Arts Event

One of the highlights of the centenary celebrations was a recent three-day arts event at the Guga’Sthebe Arts and Cultural Centre. The event was organized by community leader Alfred Magwaca and the Western Cape Archives. The arts event was an opportunity for residents of Langa to showcase their talents in music, dance, and other forms of artistic expression.

Commemorating the Centenary

The centenary celebrations began on April 27 with a 10km Freedom Run around the township, followed by cultural and sports events that engaged the community in commemorating this significant milestone. Magwaca, the driving force behind these festivities, shared his vision for the community, stating that more heritage and music events are on the horizon.

Legacy Project

As part of the centenary celebrations, a legacy project will be launched to encourage young people to learn about their community’s history. The initiative will see learners studying history at local schools interviewing elderly Langa residents to document their life experiences. These invaluable oral accounts will form part of the township’s archives and historical records.

Collaboration with the Western Cape Archives

In collaboration with the Western Cape Archives, learners from Khulani High School will have the opportunity to access Langa’s historical records. The students will explore the rich history of the area, with guidance provided by the archives on how to access and utilize the valuable information.

Drumming Lessons and Music Showcase

During the three-day arts event, learners from SACS High School had the unique opportunity to take a drumming lesson from the Olwethu Uthando Drumming and Marimba trio, local musicians who showcased their talents. Xolani Maphila, a member of the group, expressed his desire for visitors to experience the positive aspects of the township, challenging the negative perceptions that often surround these communities.

Celebrating the Past and Embracing the Future

Langa’s centenary celebrations serve as a testament to the community’s collective drive to preserve its heritage and educate future generations about their roots. As the residents of Langa come together to honor their history and look toward the future, they invite the world to join them in recognizing the strength and beauty that lies within their community.

Langa has evolved into a hub of artistic expression and an enduring symbol of community resilience. The township’s significance extends beyond its geographical boundaries, as its story intertwines with broader historical and artistic movements, which both inspire and challenge its residents. This 100-year milestone marks not only a celebration of the past but also an opportunity for growth, learning, and unity.
