A Cultural Extravaganza: Heritage Day Festivities at South Africa’s V&A Waterfront

A Week of Activities, Music, and Culture

In anticipation of South Africa’s exuberant Heritage Day, Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront prepares for a thrilling week of celebrations, starting Saturday, 23 September. A wide range of activities catering to different interests and age groups will be available, including music, braais, Rugby World Cup screenings, and cultural experiences, ensuring an energetic and lively atmosphere.

Biiig Braai and WOMAD Cape Town Festival

The week commences with the Biiig Braai, a collaborative effort between Ukhamba Beerworx and Makers Landing at Cruise Terminal, which highlights the central importance of braais in South African culture. Attendees can enjoy traditional braai dishes, local beer, and music while appreciating the stunning harbor view. Lethu Tshabangu from Ukhamba Beerworx calls it an “unforgettable day of celebration” that brings people together “through the heart of our culture – the beloved braai.” The event starts at noon, with tickets beginning at R250 (meal voucher included) on Quicket.

Following the Biiig Braai, the WOMAD Cape Town festival unfolds from Saturday to Monday, showcasing a diverse array of international artists from 11 countries in addition to some of Cape Town’s finest local talent. The three-day event features music and dance performances, workshops, and a Buskers Showcase, appealing to a variety of artistic preferences. Notable artists include Mansoor Joseph, Anabel Veloso, Gabriel Perez, Green Clover Irish Group, Adamu da Silva, and YoungstaCPT. Performances will be held at the Amphitheatre, Ferrymans Tavern, and Quay Four, commencing at 1 pm. For more information, visit www.womadsa.co.za.

SA Navy Mini Festival and Rugby World Cup Screenings

The SA Navy Mini Festival, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and V&A Waterfront, brings active service SA Navy vessels to the waterfront. This unique event provides the public with an exclusive opportunity to tour naval ships and submarines and learn from educational exhibits presented by various South African Navy units. Furthermore, there will be engaging displays such as Precision Drill, Sword Drill, Fire Fighting, Dog Show, and SA Navy Band performances. This family-friendly festival runs from 10 am to 3 pm, and entry is free.

Rugby enthusiasts can also support the Springboks during the Rugby World Cup screenings at the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre and Makers Landing. On Saturday, 23 September, South Africa faces Ireland at 9 pm. Gather friends and family to cheer on the Bokke and enjoy the match.

Record & Music Fair

Music aficionados can explore the Record & Music Fair held at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday, 30 September 2023. From 10 am to 2 pm, visitors can browse the Watershed for an extensive collection of over 3,000 vinyl records, CDs, music books, band merchandise, tees, and cassettes. Throughout the day, DJs will also exhibit their talents on decks, further enhancing the dynamic ambiance.
