Desmond Mmola, a young man from Namakgale township in Mopani District, has defied the odds and achieved success through his determination and self-belief. Here is his inspiring story.
After obtaining his bachelor pass in 2018, Mmola left his hometown with the goal of pursuing higher education in Pretoria. Despite facing hardship upon his arrival, including sleeping in campus passageways, Mmola remained determined to make the most of his time at university.
Mmola’s fortunes changed when he met Kagiso Komane, who became his mentor and provided him with a place to live. Through their discussions, Komane learned that Mmola had a bursary letter from the Department of Water and Sanitation, which Mmola had not activated. Komane helped Mmola activate the bursary, which opened up opportunities for him to receive financial assistance and pursue his dreams of higher education.
Mmola’s perseverance paid off, and he graduated with a Diploma in Analytical Chemistry from Tshwane University of Technology in May 2021. He now aspires to continue his studies up to the PhD level.
Mmola’s passion for water conservation led him to win a bursary in the Department of Water and Sanitation’s South African Youth Water Prize competition in 2017. He also represented South Africa in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden the same year. Currently, Mmola is participating in a work-integrated learning program in the Department of Water and Sanitation.
Desmond Mmola’s story is an inspiration to all who face adversity in pursuing their dreams. His unwavering determination and self-belief, combined with the help of others, has helped him achieve success and transform his life. Mmola’s story shows that with steadfast belief in oneself, dreams can indeed become a reality.
