A New Chapter Begins for Tygervalley and Plumstead Libraries

The City of Cape Town has recently announced the continuation of two libraries- Tygervalley and Plumstead libraries, which were previously facing closure due to non-renewal of their leases.

The Decision to Renew the Leases

The initial decision to delimit all external leases was made in late 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic’s significant negative impact on revenue. However, after receiving substantial feedback from stakeholders and engaging in negotiations with the property management teams of both libraries, the City reconsidered its stance.

The Importance of Tygervalley and Plumstead Libraries

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross, emphasized the importance of these libraries as knowledge centers frequently visited by patrons and residents. She further highlighted the City’s commitment to service delivery, which led to the decision to renew the lease agreements for the next two years.

Established in 1995, Plumstead Library sits in Cecil Road and currently has a remarkable collection of over 28,100 books, serving its 1,024 patrons. Tygervalley Library, celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, has an impressive 4,610 patrons who rely on its extensive resources.

The City has demonstrated its commitment to preventing the closure of library facilities based on leased properties, ensuring that these establishments will continue to thrive and serve their communities.
