The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) has announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Sithole Mbanga. After an extensive and merit-based selection process, Mr. Mbanga assumed the position on July 1, 2023, succeeding Mr. Xolile George, who became Secretary to Parliament in June 2022.
Mr. Mbanga brings a wealth of experience in operations and strategic planning, along with extensive executive-level experience in public sector governance. Prior to his appointment as SALGA CEO, he served as the CEO of the South African Cities Network (SACN), a network promoting knowledge exchange, experience sharing, and best practices in urban development and city management. He also has extensive managerial experience in public and private sectors, including the Local Government Support and Learning Network (LOGOSUL) and the National Business Initiative (NBI).
Cllr. Bheke Stofile, the SALGA President, has expressed confidence in Mr. Mbanga’s ability to lead the organization through its ongoing transformation, as outlined in the 2022-2027 strategic plan. This plan addresses global, continental, national, and local imperatives, and Mr. Mbanga’s transformative and collaborative leadership style aligns perfectly with SALGA’s commitment to effectively serving its member municipalities.
Cllr. Stofile also expressed appreciation to the SALGA executive leadership team for their dedication and hard work during the transitional period. The team’s efforts are sincerely acknowledged, and they have laid the groundwork for Mr. Mbanga’s successful tenure as CEO.
SALGA has achieved several noteworthy accomplishments in recent years, including 10 consecutive clean audits from the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA). Additionally, the organization has expanded its influence on continental and international decision-making forums and provided valuable services to its member municipalities, enabling them to execute their developmental mandates.
Under Mr. Mbanga’s leadership, SALGA aims to build upon these achievements and further improve municipal audit outcomes, thereby strengthening local government and accelerating service delivery. His expertise and leadership will undoubtedly contribute to the betterment of the organization and the communities it serves.
In conclusion, Mr. Sithole Mbanga’s appointment as CEO of SALGA marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the organization. His leadership, experience, and unwavering dedication to public service will undeniably propel SALGA to greater heights, benefiting not only the organization but also the municipalities and communities it serves. SALGA looks forward to the fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that Mr. Mbanga will bring to the table in his new role, and the organization is poised for continued success under his guidance.
