A New Dawn for YizoYizo Informal Settlement

The YizoYizo informal settlement in Rustenburg has been waiting for an upgrade for over 20 years. However, a recent announcement from Nono Maloyi, the MEC for the Department of Human Settlements in the North West, has brought hope to the over 1000 families living in the settlement.

Urgent Need for Improvement

Maloyi acknowledged the hazardous living conditions in the area and emphasized the need for urgent action. 600 of the original residents were previously relocated to Seralemeng, but many families continued to settle in YizoYizo.

Personal Commitment to Monitor Improvement

Maloyi pledged to personally monitor the settlement’s improvement, stating that the government had a constitutional mandate to ensure the dignity of its residents. The announcement was met with joy by long-time residents, such as Anna Ditsebe, who expressed optimism about finally receiving houses and basic services rendered.

Department of Public Works and Rustenburg Local Municipality Provided Land

To facilitate the settlement’s upgrade, the Department of Public Works and Rustenburg local municipality provided land for human settlements development. Maloyi directed that the development process must commence immediately, with young people employed to assist with household verification and beneficiary administration.

Countering Allegations of Electioneering Motives

Maloyi countered allegations of electioneering motives behind his intervention in the YizoYizo challenge. He highlighted his less than a year tenure in government and his focus on service delivery in local government, unblocking stalled projects, and ensuring eligible beneficiaries receive habitable homes, thus creating sustainable human settlements in the North West.

A Testament to the Government’s Commitment

The YizoYizo settlement’s upgrade serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to cater to the needs of its citizens, restoring their hope for a better future. The planned improvements in housing and basic services will undoubtedly transform the lives of YizoYizo residents, who have long endured substandard living conditions.

A Beacon of Hope and a Symbol of Progress

This development marks a significant milestone in the collective effort to create sustainable human settlements, with a focus on uplifting communities and fostering social change. It showcases the government’s responsiveness to the plight of informal settlement residents and its unwavering dedication to improving their quality of life. The YizoYizo upgrade serves as a beacon of hope and a symbol of progress in the North West region.
