A New Era for Kaizer Chiefs: Potential Captains for the Upcoming Season

As the Kaizer Chiefs gear up for the upcoming season, the management faces the challenge of selecting a new team captain. With Itumeleng Khune’s future uncertain due to the lack of a contract extension and his position as the second-choice goalkeeper, the management must look elsewhere for a leader on the field. Here are potential candidates who could take over the mantle of captaincy for the Chiefs in the upcoming season.

Keagan Dolly

As the current vice-captain for the Kaizer Chiefs, Dolly seems a natural choice for the top position. Last season, he frequently wore the captain’s armband when Khune was dropped by coach Arthur Zwane. With national team experience and a successful stint with French club Montpellier, Dolly has also won the Premier Soccer League (PSL) with Mamelodi Sundowns. As a regular starter for the Chiefs, Dolly is well-positioned to take over the role of captaincy if Khune departs or remains as a backup goalkeeper.

Yusuf Maart

When Dolly was sidelined for the latter part of last season, Maart stepped up to assume the responsibilities of captain. A former Bafana Bafana national and a regular midfield starter, Maart brings a sense of calm and composure to his teammates on the field. His qualities as a leader make him a strong candidate for the captaincy, particularly if the Amakhosi management is looking for a long-term replacement, given that Dolly is approaching the twilight of his career.

Zitha Kwinika

Kwinika’s leadership experience extends beyond the Kaizer Chiefs, as he previously captained Stellenbosch FC before joining the team. As one of Zwane’s preferred starters last season, Kwinika has demonstrated his ability to lead on the field. Moreover, he has had the opportunity to learn from Amakhosi legend Erick Mathoho during the latter’s final season at Naturena. However, Kwinika’s lack of a senior national team call-up could be a disadvantage in his bid for the captaincy.

Wildcards: Given Msimango and Sifiso Hlanti

Msimango’s previous experience as captain of TS Galaxy, combined with Hlanti’s status as a PSL veteran with more experience than any other player on the team besides Khune, make them intriguing options for the Amakhosi management to consider.

As the new season approaches, the Kaizer Chiefs must carefully weigh their options for a team captain, considering factors such as leadership skills, experience, and on-field performance. With a new coach potentially joining the team as well, the choice of captain will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s identity and success in the coming season. The Amakhosi management has no shortage of strong candidates, but ultimately, the decision will hinge on the qualities they believe a captain must possess to lead the Kaizer Chiefs to victory.
