A Revitalized Recreation Space: Woodstock’s New Netball Court

A Refreshing Addition to the Community

In the vibrant, energetic center of Woodstock, a newly revamped recreation center is making waves. Golders Green Park, a well-loved hub for communal events and outdoor pursuits, has unveiled a brand-new Netball court, courtesy of the City’s Recreation and Parks Department. This introduction marks a significant step forward in improving local recreational facilities, demonstrating the City’s steadfast commitment to creating up-to-date, inclusive, and enjoyable spaces for everyone.

In the past, an old, weathered netball court occupied this spot, serving as a stark reminder of the relentless tide of time. However, the transformation of this area into a versatile, multipurpose space symbolizes a fresh change, reflecting the city’s forward-thinking outlook for the future.

A Hefty Investment in Community Enhancement

This metamorphosis was far from a simple undertaking. An allocation of R84,000 from the ward budget was directed towards the acquisition of outdoor fitness equipment. In parallel, a substantial investment of R500,000 was made by the Recreation and Parks Department in the netball/basketball court. In addition, an extra R150,000 from this year’s ward budget allowed for the inclusion of permanent tiered seating, providing a cozy vantage point for spectators. The park’s aesthetic appeal has been exponentially upgraded, with the introduction of fresh play equipment and attractive greenery lining the park’s border.

The Netball World Cup earlier this year served as a catalyst for several local netball court overhauls. Regrettably, the project’s completion was stalled due to inclement weather conditions. Nevertheless, the much-anticipated unveiling lived up to expectations.

Community Engagement and Celebration

An introductory match took center stage during the unveiling, featuring spirited junior teams, including a local girls’ netball club known for organizing games and promoting sports activities. Community members and students from Chapel Street Primary School added a burst of lively energy to the proceedings. Notably, Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Councillor Patricia van der Ross, and other dignitaries joined in an exhibition match demonstrating the court’s adaptability and versatility.

Ian McMahon, the local ward councilor, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, underscoring the City’s continuous investment in enhancing Woodstock’s parks and recreational facilities. He expressed optimism that the community would play an active role in maintaining and caring for these improvements, ensuring their continued benefit to the community.

Future Maintenance and Community Integration

Bradwin Schultz, appointed as the Park Buddy, has assumed responsibility for the continuous upkeep and enhancement of the facility. His responsibilities include regular care of the park, promoting its lush appearance, and fostering ongoing engagement between the community and authorities to maintain the park’s status as a vibrant and safe hub of activity.

Councillor Patricia van der Ross, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, offered her thoughts on the initiative. She said that the new multipurpose court is more than just a venue for physical activity. It symbolizes a space for shared experiences and camaraderie, a reflection of the City’s commitment to Woodstock, netball, and the younger generation. This timely addition deserves recognition for creating vibrant spaces for the community, capturing the spirit of inclusivity and interaction.
