Mzansi Magic has unveiled their latest project, a thrilling television series titled “Shaka iLembe,” which is set to premiere on June 18th at 8 pm. The show promises to be an extraordinary portrayal of the legendary Zulu King Shaka’s life and the events that shaped his journey. The series aims to present an authentic depiction of Nguni culture whilst acknowledging its fictional interpretation, taking cues from historical events.
The show’s anticipation was palpable as it was unveiled by DStv Media Sales CEO Fahmeeda Cassim-Surtee and MultiChoice General Entertainment CEO Nomsa Philiso at a special event held at Inanda Polo Club in Sandton. The 12-part series boasts of high production value, filmed in 4K with cutting-edge visual effects, providing a stunning backdrop to the dynastic saga that spans across the Zulu, Elangeni, Hlubi, Mthethwa, and Ndwandwe clans. The series is the biggest production ever undertaken by Mzansi Magic and is fully funded by the MultiChoice Group as part of their extensive local content offerings.
Cassim-Surtee highlights the significance of “Shaka iLembe” in African storytelling, stating, “It was created for the local market, but it is also, most certainly, a global television property.” She adds that the series is an epic one, told on an epic scale and destined to keep audiences tuned in with strong plotlines, stunning visuals, an evocative soundtrack, and a range of powerhouse performances.
Philiso echoes the excitement, praising the cast and crew’s outstanding work in transforming the larger-than-life story into a riveting drama series packed with conflict, action, romance, betrayal, sacrifice, struggle, triumph, and loss. She notes that the series is a highlight on the DStv calendar.
The creative team comprises an exceptional ensemble of talented actors, including Nomzamo Mbatha, Lemogang Tsipa, Senzo Radebe, Thembinkosi Mthembu, Wiseman Mncube, Khabonina Qubeka, Dawn Thandeka King, Hope Mbhele, Mondli Makhoba, Sthandiwe Kgoroge, newcomer Ntando Zondi, among others. The creative team is led by Oscar-nominated director Angus Gibson, executive producers Nomzamo Mbatha, Nhlanhla Mtaka, and Desiree Markgraaff, along with cultural and historical advisor Professor Hlonipha Mokoena.
