A Technological Genesis in Africa: Cape Town’s Role in the Africa Tech Festival

The Africa Tech Festival 2023 illuminated Cape Town’s skyline with a dynamic fusion of technology and innovation. The compelling event was co-orchestrated by the City of Cape Town and the national Department of Communications and Digital Technologies. Esteemed sponsors, including Huawei Technologies and Orange Middle East and Africa, brought their support, turning this festival into a global rendezvous for technology titans.

From the 11th to the 14th of November, the Cape Town Convention Centre transformed into a vibrant hub for technology aficionados. The leading team of the City of Cape Town, directed by Corporate Services Mayoral Council Member Alderman Theresa Uys, Executive Director of Corporate Services Ernest Sass, among other influential figures, took the lead in engaging with the surge of international delegations.

An International Assembly: Tech Experts and Diplomats

Delegations from Estonia and the USA, comprising tech experts, diplomats, and corporate leaders, contributed their knowledge and experiences, solidifying a global technology dialogue.

The Estonian delegation, guided by Sandra Särav from the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, immersed in progressive discussions on nurturing a digital platform for technology stakeholders. The productive chat illuminated the digital progress of Tallinn, recognized as one of the globe’s most digital cities. The conversation revolved around policies, data sharing protocols, data privacy, and cybersecurity, paving the way for future collaborations between Cape Town and Estonia.

Alderman Uys, the Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, voiced her excitement regarding future collaborations with Estonia. Her focus centered on the shared growth and the reciprocation of digital proficiency. The digital transformation of Estonia has inspired Cape Town and stirred ambitions for a similar technological evolution.

A United Vision: The US Delegation and the Future of AI

The American delegation’s visit, which included professionals from the US Department of State and the US Embassy, fostered a unified perspective on the importance of apt government regulations concerning emerging technologies, notably artificial intelligence (AI). The conversation laid the groundwork for knowledge exchange concerning data, cybersecurity, and AI strategies, policies, and governance frameworks.

The US delegation commended the advancements made by the City of Cape Town, particularly praising the City app—an innovative service that allows residents to report civic issues conveniently. The recognition of Cape Town’s achievement was heightened by the fact that such a consolidated service isn’t widespread throughout the USA.
