The loss of two senior environmental officials, Mushudu Owen Mundalamo and Kobus de Wet, has left a deep void in the environmental community. The passing of these two dedicated individuals has deeply saddened South Africa’s Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment Minister Barbara Creecy. In their roles, they made significant contributions to environmental conservation, leaving a lasting impact on the preservation of South Africa’s natural heritage.
Mushudu Owen Mundalamo, aged 42, served as the Director of Climate Change Mitigation Policy, Regulation, and Planning for the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment. He played a crucial role in policy development, regulations, and planning aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change in South Africa and beyond. Apart from his professional accomplishments, Mundalamo was an avid soccer enthusiast, writer, and analyst, and a passionate supporter of Orlando Pirates. He is survived by his life partner, Tshego Marumo, a son, and twin boys.
Kobus de Wet, aged 62, was an essential member of the SANParks Environmental Crime Investigative Unit (ECI). Tragically, he lost his life in a hippopotamus attack while camping in the Kruger National Park. De Wet played a leading role in combating rhino poaching and various other environmental crimes in and around South Africa’s national parks. He is survived by his wife Almarie de Wet, two children, and three grandchildren.
The passing of these two environmental champions highlights the urgent need to address environmental challenges. Climate change and environmental degradation pose significant threats to ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide. The loss of dedicated officials like Mundalamo and de Wet underscores the importance of our commitment to conservation efforts in South Africa and beyond.
Although the loss of these two officials is a tragedy, it provides an opportunity for reflection on the importance of environmental conservation. The lives and work of Mundalamo and de Wet offer valuable lessons on the dedication, passion, and commitment required to address complex environmental issues. In their memory, we must continue the fight against climate change and environmental degradation to ensure a sustainable and just future for all.
