On June 21, 2023, Kishugu Aviation aerial firefighting pilot, Justin van As, tragically lost his life during a firefighting operation in Ngodwana, Mpumalanga. He was a devoted professional and a hero who dedicated his life to saving others and protecting our environment. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Ms. Barbara Creecy, expressed her deepest condolences to Justin’s family in a heartfelt message.
Born in Klerksdorp, Justin van As joined Kishugu Aviation on May 1, 2019, as an AT802 AFF Pilot. He is survived by his wife, Amelia, and an 18-year-old son. Justin was a passionate reader who enjoyed historical events, research, and philosophical discussions. He had an unwavering commitment to his work and remained devoted until his last breath.
Minister Creecy praised Justin’s bravery and dedication, acknowledging the profound sadness felt by his family and the firefighting fraternity. She remarked that Justin’s legacy would be forever remembered as that of a true firefighting hero.
The circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear, and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has launched an investigation to determine the cause. Ensuring the safety of pilots and ground crews is a top priority for Kishugu Aviation, who will collaborate with the SACAA throughout the investigation.
Kishugu Aviation is a subsidiary of Kishugu Holdings and forms part of the Working on Fire – Kishugu Joint Venture. This organization implements the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment’s Working on Fire program. By providing aerial firefighting services, Kishugu Aviation plays a crucial role in combating wildfires and preserving our natural resources.
