The bustling city streets can be a hazardous place, especially for its youngest inhabitants. The Part-Time Traffic Attendants (PTAs) make up the Road Safety Education Unit of the Traffic Service and play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of thousands of children as they navigate their way to and from school.
The unit’s 128 PTAs and 21 Traffic Officers assist children in using pedestrian crossings safely and train scholar patrols in regulating traffic at crossings. They take up their positions from 07:00 to 08:30 in the morning and 12:00 to 15:30 in the afternoon, regardless of the weather and school schedule.
The city recently held an appreciation ceremony at Alphen Hall in Constantia to celebrate the dedicated traffic attendants for their unwavering commitment and perseverance. Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, acknowledged the role they play in fostering a safer environment for learners.
The Road Safety Education Unit reaches 113 scholar patrols, delivers nearly 2,300 educational lectures on road safety at schools and Early Childhood Development Centres, and prepares students for the challenges they will face as responsible adult road users.
The Junior Traffic Centre at Hillstar Driving Licence Testing Centre provides a simulated real-world environment where children can learn key road safety concepts through practical experience. Such hands-on exposure is instrumental in instilling a sense of responsibility and awareness in students.
The tireless efforts of the PTAs contribute to a sense of security and safety for the city’s children as they traverse the city streets. The unsung heroes deserve recognition for their diligent work and invaluable service to the future generations. As a city, we should tip our hats to them.
In conclusion, the PTAs are unsung heroes who deserve recognition for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and well-being of the city’s children. Their tireless efforts contribute to a sense of security and safety that is crucial in instilling a sense of responsibility and awareness in students.
