From June 24 to July 17, 2023, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is hosting its annual Winter Wonders event. Families and children below 17 years of age can enjoy this event for free.
The event starts with the International Day of Yoga, organized by the Consulate General of India. On June 24, participants can attend an outdoor yoga session on the garden lawns from 10 am to 11 am.
Young nature enthusiasts can attend an Enchanted Forest Workshop led by master horticulturist Cherise Viljoen. During these workshops, children can learn about the forest floor and create their mini magical forest to take home. The workshops will be held on June 27, July 10, and July 14. Prior booking is necessary.
Penguin Random House is hosting a free kids’ book reading series featuring celebrated children’s authors such as Irene Berman, Nick Norman, Riaan Manser, Makhosi Dewette Dludla, and others. The readings will take place outside the Kirstenbosch Bookshop. Children can also participate in a coloring competition, and the winners will be announced on July 14. The bookshop offers discounts on children’s books and selected titles during the Winter Wonders program.
Visitors aged 15 and above can discover the calming art of forest bathing. Forest Bathing Cape Town will host a 90-minute introductory experience into this practice, also known as Shinrin Yoku. Participants can experience reduced stress and anxiety, promoting overall mental and physical well-being. Sessions will be held on June 27, July 1, July 6, and July 11.
The red City Sightseeing bus is offering a special deal for visitors to the botanical garden. Two children can travel with one adult for just R49 per classic child ticket.
