A collaboration between several agencies, including the South African Police Service’s Provincial Organised Crime unit, Sabie Vispol, Local Criminal Record Centre in Lydenburg, Lydenburg K-9 unit, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Minerals and Resources, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and private security firms Phoenix Security and Amandla Security, ensued.

The team executed a sting operation in the early hours of September 17, 2023, resulting in the arrest of the illegal miners, known as ‘ZamaZamas,’ and the discovery of two firearms with ammunition among the suspects. The eight individuals suspected of kidnapping the Lesotho national were also apprehended.

Human Trafficking and Potential Broader Networks

Preliminary investigations suggest that two of the suspects were allegedly involved in human trafficking, using victims from Lesotho for illegal mining activities in the Sabie area. As the investigation continues, more charges could be brought against these suspects, indicating the potential for uncovering a broader network of criminal activities.

The confiscated firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they have been used in previous crimes. The suspects are expected to appear at the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on September 18, 2023. The investigation is ongoing, with stakeholders working together to ensure that justice is served.
