Advocating for Labor Law Compliance: A Seminar in Mthatha

The Department of Employment and Labour’s Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) branch is organizing an advocacy seminar from June 27-30, 2023, at Hotel Savoy in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. The seminar aims to raise awareness about compliance with labor laws and educate employers, employees, and their organizations about relevant legislation.

The seminar will cover significant labor legislation such as the National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA), Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), and processes related to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA).

Protecting Vulnerable Workers

Dr. Pravine Naidoo, Director of Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations, emphasizes the importance of protecting vulnerable workers by encouraging compliance with labor laws among both employers and employees. The event will also elucidate the processes involved when dealing with the CCMA for noncompliance issues.

Empowering Employers and Employees

The IES branch focuses on empowering employers and employees through education and information sharing, ultimately aiming to improve compliance and ensure the realization of decent work conditions. The upcoming seminar in Mthatha aligns with these objectives and fosters a better understanding of labor laws among key stakeholders.

One of the highlights of the event will be a discussion of amendments to the NMWA and Unemployment Benefits. The final day of the seminar will feature a mission visit to informal activities in the area, with the goal of formalizing this sector. By bringing the informal sector under the scope of labor laws, the department aims to ensure that workers in this area have access to services typically reserved for the formal sector.
