On June 20, 2023, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted the Africa Public Service Day Ministerial Youth Outreach Dialogue, with Hon. Ms. Noxolo Kiviet, MP Minister for the Public Service and Administration in attendance. The event had the theme “The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will require a fit for purpose African public administration to succeed,” aligning with the Continental Africa Public Service Day (APSD) celebrated on June 23, 2023.
June is Youth Month in South Africa, celebrating the bravery and determination of young individuals who fought for freedom, equality, and justice. The month represents the potential of youth to drive positive change toward “The Africa We Want,” as outlined in Agenda 2063. Hon. Kiviet acknowledged the importance of youth participation and leadership in realizing Africa’s vision for a prosperous, united, and empowered continent.
Hon. Kiviet emphasized the critical role that public service and administration play in creating a favorable environment for investment and value-adding industries. She shared her insights on the potential of AfCFTA to boost economic growth and trade in Africa.
The dialogue paved the way for the upcoming APSD event scheduled for June 23rd in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The event will provide a platform for discussing and strategizing the implementation of the AfCFTA, reinforcing the African Union (AU) theme for 2023, “Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area Implementation.”
The APSD aims to recognize and celebrate the critical role of public service and administration in driving sustainable development, promoting good governance, and improving citizens’ lives across Africa. It offers a platform for fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and collaborating among African nations to enhance public service delivery.
The APSD also plays a vital role in facilitating the actualization of the “African Charter on the Values and Principles of Public Service and Administration.” South Africa deposited its Baseline Report at the African Union Commission (AUC) on the implementation of the Charter in December 2022, anticipating other state parties’ submission of their country reports.
The Africa Public Service Day Ministerial Youth Outreach Dialogue is a significant milestone in the journey towards realizing a thriving and united Africa. The event highlighted the importance of youth engagement, public service, and administration in shaping the continent’s future and fostering economic growth.
Through collective efforts and shared commitment, Africa can leverage the AfCFTA’s potential and transform its economic landscape. The upcoming APSD celebration in Victoria Falls presents yet another opportunity for stakeholders to strategize, collaborate, and accelerate the implementation of this historic trade agreement, ultimately contributing to a brighter and more inclusive future for all Africans.
