Africa’s First-Ever Netball World Cup in Cape Town

Cape Town is buzzing with excitement as it hosts Africa’s first-ever Netball World Cup at the CTICC from July 28th to August 6th, 2023. This historic event has captured the attention of netball enthusiasts and sports lovers worldwide.

The Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony, a vibrant celebration of Africa, kickstarted the tournament, fueling the motivation for a thrilling 10-day competition. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis extended a warm welcome to the participating teams, World Netball executives, and distinguished representatives from various countries. Cape Town is more than just a host city, as it is also a funding partner and ensures safety and security throughout the event.

Safety and Security Measures

Safety is a top priority during the tournament, with the City of Cape Town deploying various safety and security personnel. These include Traffic Services, Metro Police, Law Enforcement, Disaster Risk Management, and Fire and Rescue, who work in collaboration with SAPS to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all players, spectators, and staff.

On-Court Action and Fan Parks

The tournament has already witnessed some exhilarating on-court action on its first day, and there is much more in store for the spectators. For those who are unable to secure tickets, the city has organized a Netball World Cup Fan Park outside the CTICC. Entry to the Fan Park is free, and visitors can enjoy daily games on big screens, live entertainment, netball exhibition games, a children’s corner, and daily giveaways. A food court with outdoor seating, snacks, hot beverages, and a beer garden is also available for guests.

Public Viewing Areas

In addition, the City encourages residents to enjoy the sport at a free Public Viewing Area (PVA) near them. Each PVA features seating, surround sound, and live uninterrupted streaming of the games, ensuring no disruptions due to load-shedding. Refreshments and snacks can be purchased at affordable rates, and local entertainment is provided at each location, making it an enjoyable day out for family and friends. The four PVA locations include:

  1. Proteaville Recreation Centre, c/o Peter Barlow and Abdurahman Streets, Bellville South
  2. Langa Civic Hall, c/o Church and Washington (King Langalibalele)
  3. OR Tambo Multi-Purpose Centre, Jeff Masemola Road, Khayelitsha
  4. Portland Indoor Centre, Address: c/o Merrydale & Hazeldene Avenues, Portland, Mitchells Plain
