The first-ever Netball World Cup in Africa is set to take place in Cape Town, marking a historic moment for the sport and the continent. Sixteen nations are set to compete, with the opening center pass scheduled for July 28, 2023, at CTICC and the event running until August 6, 2023.
The City of Cape Town welcomed all participating nations during a flag ceremony held last Friday. The city hoisted the flags of each participating nation, marking the beginning of an exciting journey filled with sportsmanship, camaraderie, and thrilling competition.
As teams settle into their training sessions, they are focusing on physicality and tactics in preparation for the diverse playing styles they will encounter, with the margins between the top nations being closer than ever.
Australia, New Zealand, England, Jamaica, and South Africa are the top five ranked teams, with the SPAR Proteas of South Africa being the fan favorite.
As the host nation, South Africa holds the home-ground advantage, attracting attention from fans and rivals alike. The significance of the Netball World Cup taking place in Africa is not lost on JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.
South Africa has consistently ranked among the top netball nations and will compete in Group C during the preliminary stages, alongside Jamaica, Wales, and Sri Lanka.
Fans can catch the SPAR Proteas live at CTICC or visit the official Cape Town Fan Park for a free all-day experience located on Walter Sisulu Avenue.
As the world’s eyes turn to Cape Town and the historic Netball World Cup, the importance of this event extends beyond the limits of the court. This milestone represents the growth and impact of netball on African soil, creating a legacy that will endure for generations to come.
