The Electoral Commission has announced the voter registration weekend for the upcoming municipal ward by-elections in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape provinces. The by-elections will be held on 28 June 2023, and it is crucial for eligible voters to register, check their details, and update their addresses if necessary.
The voting stations in the respective wards will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 on 13-14 May 2023 to facilitate voter registration. Voters must bring their valid identification document, such as a green barcoded ID book, smartcard ID, or valid Temporary ID Certificate. Though documented proof of address is not mandatory, voters must provide their physical home address or sufficient details about their residence. It is a criminal offense to register and vote in a ward where one does not reside.
Voting stations will be available in convenient locations within each respective ward to ensure easy access for residents. Local Electoral Commission offices will accept registrations on weekdays during office hours for those unable to visit during the voter registration weekend.
Special voting will take place on 27 June 2023, between 08:00 and 17:00, for those who have difficulty visiting voting stations on election day. This will occur at voting stations and via home visits. Applications for special votes can be made at local IEC offices between 12-15 June 2023 or online through the IEC’s website. Voters can also apply for special votes by sending an SMS with their identity number to 32249 (charged at R1). However, this method is only available for those voting at their station and not for home visits.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, voters are no longer required to wear masks or sanitize their hands at voting stations. Nevertheless, they may do so at their discretion to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
Registering to vote is essential to participate in the upcoming municipal ward by-elections. The Electoral Commission aims to promote democratic processes and ensure that citizens have a voice in their local government. For more information on the by-elections, including details on how to register, locate your nearest voting station, and apply for special votes, visit the IEC website or contact your local IEC office.
