The cliff has seen a large number of accidents this year, and has killed many people in recent months.
On September 5, a man’s body was recovered by police in George after a fisherman saw a vehicle going over the cliff and contacted authorities.
This came after a 57-year-old woman went missing in August and was later confirmed to have passed away after her vehicle went off the edge.
Another man was killed in a fatal car accident on Voëlklip Cliff. Back in February, he plummeted off the lookout point and died.
In January, a 34-year-old mother and her two-year old daughter were killed when their car went over the cliff. One week after the incident, the toddler’s body was found at sea.
In 2021, the crisis led to multiple deaths.
In response to the broken railing, the George Municipality facilitated a task team of members of the Department of Environmental Affairs, the provincial Transport and Public Works department, and the Herolds Bay Ratepayers’ Association. The property owner was also a member.
Poles were erected along the curve of the road to prevent erosion, and large rocks were placed as another spot for people to leave their cars.
