Ardagh Glass Packaging Africa has established itself as a key player in South Africa’s economy with a staggering R3.3 billion investment. The company’s commitment to sustainable growth aligns with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for increased investment in the country.
Over the course of two years, Ardagh Glass Packaging Africa invested R3.3 billion in expanding its facility in Nigel, Ekurhuleni. The initial investment of R1.5 billion in May 2022 grew to encompass an additional R1.8 billion, demonstrating the company’s dedication to South Africa’s economic development.
Ardagh Glass Packaging Africa operates four modern glass production facilities in Bellville, Clayville, Nigel, and Wadeville, generating approximately five billion glass containers annually. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Curnow, emphasizes the demand for sustainable packaging in Africa and Ardagh’s commitment to meeting this need by investing in its people and assets.
Ardagh’s expansion initiatives prioritize environmental sustainability, including efforts to decarbonize the glass production process, reduce emissions, and improve energy and water efficiency. These measures are crucial to the company’s ongoing journey towards sustainability.
Ardagh’s expansion projects create numerous employment opportunities, with approximately 300 direct jobs expected to emerge. Ancillary supply-chain expenditure stimulates local economies, and Ardagh estimates that each direct job generates at least five indirect jobs.
Ardagh Glass Packaging Africa’s substantial investments and robust expansion projects demonstrate the company’s commitment to South Africa’s economy. By addressing the growing demand for sustainable packaging, promoting eco-friendly practices, and creating job opportunities, Ardagh is transforming the container production landscape on the continent.
