Athlone Stadium, known for its association with soccer, is making history by hosting its second Currie Cup rugby match on Friday, 26 May 2023. The iconic stadium is demonstrating its versatility and capacity to host diverse events. This rugby weekend promises to be a thrilling experience for both the athletes and the spectators.

The Currie Cup is one of the most prestigious rugby events, bringing excitement and anticipation to Cape Town as the DHL Western Province take on the ADT Fidelity Lions. The first game last week, where the DHL Western Province faced the Airlink Pumas, set the stage for the upcoming match.
Match Day Schedule
The match day schedule begins with the curtain raiser event, featuring the DHL Western Province Ladies taking on the Lions Ladies at 14:30. The main event, DHL Western Province versus the ADT Fidelity Lions, kicks off at 17:00. Tickets for the unreserved seating are priced at R50 each and can be purchased from Ticketpro.
Parking and Access
General parking is available at P3 and P4, accessible via Hickory Street from Klipfontein Road. Spectators approaching the stadium from Vanguard Drive (Jakes Gerwil) or M5 direction are also advised to use the same parking areas.

Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, expressed his excitement about the stadium’s role in the Currie Cup rugby matches. He said, “Athlone Stadium is synonymous with sports such as soccer, so we are excited to showcase its versatility to host various events, as a Strategic Asset of the Economic Growth Directorate, including the second rugby match. Last week’s match, which was the first rugby match to be held at this stadium, went well, so we are looking forward to Friday night.”
Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, invites all Capetonians to come out on Friday night and support the Western Province players. He said, “This is a rugby weekend for Capetonians, and the Currie Cup is one of the most prestigious events on the rugby calendar. I want to encourage all Capetonians to come out on Friday night to support our Western Province players at Athlone Stadium and show your ‘gees’.”
