Boosting Job Creation in North West, South Africa through Renewable Energy Investment

In South Africa, the SOLA Group is progressing with the construction of Africa’s largest renewable energy project under a corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in Lichtenburg, North-West. The project has created employment opportunities and increased economic activity in the region.

The Solar PV Power Plant

The solar photovoltaic (PV) power project is worth R3.8 billion and is being built on approximately 430 hectares of land. It will generate about 580 gigawatt-hours per year of clean, renewable electricity, equivalent to the annual consumption of over 40,000 households. The project will supply renewable energy to Tronox Mineral Sands via a corporate PPA and the electricity will be delivered to Tronox’s facilities through wheeling over the national electricity grid. The project is being built by SOLA Build and WBHO, under a Joint Venture, and is currently in the construction phase, expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2024.

Creating Job Opportunities

Katherine Persson, the Head of SOLA Assets, has highlighted that the construction phase has already employed 887 unskilled and 38 skilled workers directly and through Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). The project has spent close to R120 million in Lichtenburg and surrounding areas in relation to the project. The project team has collaborated closely with Ditsobotla Local Municipality, the district, and the province to ensure the project advances as planned.

Community Engagement

Extensive community engagement is a critical aspect of the project. According to Persson, it is required to maintain favorable stakeholder relations. The project continuously supports Ditsobotla, for instance, by working together to resolve water supply issues in the municipality.

Sustainable Energy Solutions

SOLA’s core business involves developing, designing, financing, building, and operating renewable energy projects in South Africa. The company considers itself a market leader in providing renewable energy solutions to corporate buyers in South Africa, particularly in large wheeling projects. By generating clean energy, reducing the burden on traditional power sources, and fostering economic growth, the project exemplifies how sustainable energy solutions can contribute to a brighter future for all.

The project’s construction and the resulting job creation opportunities in North-West South Africa underscore the potential for renewable energy investments to stimulate local economies. The project is expected to make a significant impact towards reducing load shedding and resolving the energy crisis. By investing in renewable energy, South Africa can address the energy crisis while also creating sustainable jobs and supporting economic growth.
