The BRICS Business Forum recently held a meeting with the participation of delegates from South Africa, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and several African nations. The forum aimed to promote cooperation among the BRICS economies, highlighting the potential for increased collaboration and innovation in the face of global challenges.
During the meeting, the South African Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Mr. Ebrahim Patel, welcomed prominent guests, including Ms. Dilma Rousseff, the President of the New Development Bank, and Mr. Fernando Haddad, the Finance Minister of Brazil.
In his speech, Minister Patel praised South Africa’s impressive export achievements, with goods worth R2 trillion exported last year. He emphasized that the rapid evolution of the global landscape meant that “business as usual is no longer an option.” With increasing polarization, urgent climate change concerns, and rapid technological advancements, the minister urged businesses to adapt and innovate in response to such challenges.
Minister Patel also highlighted the collective economic strength of the BRICS nations, accounting for over a quarter of the world’s economic output. He emphasized the importance of networks for policy exchange and knowledge-sharing, praising the establishment of institutions like the New Development Bank. The minister championed BRICS’ commitment to a worldview founded on independent development, without reliance on others.
Minister Patel hailed the African Continental Free Trade Area, comprising of 54 nations, as a driving force for African innovation and industrialization. He called for the exploration of how companies and firms in the BRICS economies could grow and prosper through collaboration and partnership. The minister championed investment and trade practices that support the industrialization and welfare enhancement of developing nations.
