BRICS Ministers Discuss Inclusive Multilateralism at Cape Town Meeting

On June 1st, 2023, the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Relations gathered in Cape Town, South Africa to discuss a range of political, economic, and social issues. The theme of the meeting was “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism.” The ministers emphasized the importance of solidarity, openness, and consensus in shaping global policies.

Reaffirming Commitment to Multilateralism, Upholding International Law

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateralism, upholding international law, and promoting cooperation. The United Nations was highlighted as a cornerstone for international peace, security, and sustainable development. The ministers expressed concern about the consequences of unilateral coercive measures and emphasized the need for improved global governance.

Reforms of UN Organs, G20 Summit, and Sustainable Development Goals

The ministers called for the revitalization of the UN Security Council and General Assembly. China and Russia expressed support for Brazil, India, and South Africa to play a greater role in the UN. The G20 Summit, to be hosted by India in 2023, was acknowledged as a premier multilateral forum for economic cooperation. The ministers also called for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through a balanced and integrated approach.

Rules-Based Multilateral Trading System, Energy Security, and Climate Change

The ministers expressed support for a rules-based multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core, emphasizing the significance of special and differential treatment for developing countries. They also addressed energy security, stressing the need for resilient global supply chains, predictable demand, and universal access to sustainable energy sources. Concerning climate change, the ministers reiterated the importance of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement.

Global Security Challenges and AI Development

The ministers discussed various global security challenges, such as terrorism, extremism, and radicalization, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to counter these threats. They also underscored the importance of responsible and ethical development of Artificial Intelligence for socio-economic development and inclusive growth, calling for enhanced communication and cooperation on AI technology.

The BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Relations meeting in Cape Town marked a significant milestone in strengthening cooperation and addressing global challenges. The spirit of solidarity and consensus among the BRICS nations will be indispensable in shaping a more equitable and sustainable global order.
