Cape Town City’s young and talented striker, Khanyisa Mayo, had been rumored to be a transfer target for teams like Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. However, Mayo has decided to stay with his current club, Cape Town City, which pleased his coach, Eric Tinkler.
Tinkler revealed during the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season launch that Mayo made a conscious decision to remain with his current club despite interest from other teams. Mayo’s dedication to Cape Town City was never in question, and he went out of his way to express his desire to stay with the team.
“Khanyisa went into the chairman’s office and said, ‘Chairman, I don’t want to go anywhere’,” Tinkler shared, debunking rumors that it was a difficult decision for the player.
According to Tinkler, Mayo is consistently training hard and focusing on reaching his ambitious goal of scoring 20 or more goals this season. Mayo’s impressive work ethic and commitment to Cape Town City made it easier for the team to turn away from offers made by Sundowns and Chiefs.
The club announced that Mayo had signed a long-term deal with them, further cementing his commitment to the team.
Mayo’s 12 goals last season earned him the Top Goalscorer Award, which he shared with Peter Shalulile of Sundowns. Tinkler expects even more from his player this season, and he is optimistic that Mayo can reach his 20-goal target, which would significantly contribute to their team’s overall success.
“If he gets the 20 goals, I will be happy, that would be eight more than he scored for us last season,” Tinkler asserted.
Mayo’s decision to remain with Cape Town City speaks volumes about his loyalty and dedication to the club. His ambition, drive, and commitment to improving his skills bode well for both Mayo’s personal growth and the team’s prospects in the upcoming season.
With Mayo leading their attack, Cape Town City’s fans can rest assured that their team will be a formidable opponent in the DStv Premiership. This season promises to be an exciting one, and Mayo’s unwavering allegiance to Cape Town City is a testament to the club’s potential for success.
