It also serves as a platform for fundraising and raising awareness for causes such as breast cancer through organizations like ILoveBoobies and CANSA.

A Celebratory Event with a Charitable Purpose

The Cape Town Cycle Tour, a renowned and spirited event, is set to return for its 46th edition on March 10, 2024, with the primary objective of promoting and raising funds for multiple charitable organizations. Since its establishment, giving back to the community has been a key aspect of the event. In the past five years alone, the Cycle Tour has allocated nearly R50 million across the Peninsula, benefiting not just its two primary beneficiaries – the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont – but also numerous charity groups that participate in the event.

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is appropriate to emphasize two of the consistent charity groups that utilize the Cape Town Cycle Tour as a means of fundraising and raising awareness for their cause: CANSA and ILoveBoobies.

ILoveBoobies: Providing Vital Breast Exams for South African Women

Under the enthusiastic leadership of Nicky Webb, ILoveBoobies has been a beneficiary of the Cycle Tour’s generosity for seven years. The organization’s main focus lies in offering free breast exams (screening and diagnosis) to South African women who encounter financial, geographical, or social obstacles when attempting to access essential medical services. The self-sustaining and expandable screening program currently supports 100 tests per month at a cost of R300 per test, with substantial contributions from the Cycle Tour Charity Group.

Webb states that the assistance and opportunity provided by the Cape Town Cycle Tour have enabled ILoveBoobies to screen over 7,600 women since the organization’s inception. During the event, the organization actively interacts with the cycling community, distributing 20,000 helmet stickers at the Expo and offering a popular temporary tattoo activation for cyclists. As the organization emphasizes, the Cycle Tour remains their “best-supported event within the cycling community” and is an annual highlight.

CANSA: Leading South Africa Towards a Cancer-Free Society

Also battling breast cancer is CANSA, the Cancer Association of South Africa, which was established in 1931. The organization’s vision is to guide South Africa to a cancer-free society. CANSA’s involvement in the Cape Town Cycle Tour for numerous years has enabled them to advocate for an active, healthy lifestyle and instruct others on ways to reduce their cancer risk.

Leillani Geduld, who supervises CANSA’s yearly presence at the Cycle Tour, explains that the event offers a fundraising opportunity via the GivenGain platform, allowing individuals and groups to register as fundraisers that contribute to CANSA’s Care and Support services for the communities they serve. Additionally, charity entries are accessible for riders to obtain in support of CANSA’s mission towards a cancer-free South Africa.

Combining Cycling Passion with Meaningful Causes

The Cape Town Cycle Tour serves not only as an invigorating and joyous cycling event but also as an essential platform for supporting charitable organizations like ILoveBoobies and CANSA. Through their involvement and the generosity of the cycling community, these organizations can continue striving towards their objectives of providing vital medical services, education, and support in the battle against breast cancer.

As the 46th Cape Town Cycle Tour draws near, participants and observers alike can anticipate an exciting event that blends their love for cycling with the chance to contribute to significant causes and positively impact the lives of others.
