Cape Town has announced an extension of the deadline for pensioner support applications from 31 August 2023 to 30 November 2023. The extension aims to provide ample time for pensioners aged 60 and above, as well as individuals receiving social grants or a pension of no more than R22,000 per month, to seek assistance from the City.
For the 2023/24 period, the City’s total social support package has increased by over half a billion. The goal is to extend support to a larger number of pensioners and indigent households. Pensioners qualifying for the rebate will have their applications remain valid until the next municipal valuation of their property comes into effect, which is expected to occur by 30 June 2026 or until a supplementary valuation is implemented.
Pensioners receiving a social grant or a pension of no more than R22,000 per month may be eligible for a rates rebate ranging from 10% to 100%. The City of Cape Town processes over 250 applications daily, providing support to numerous residents.
Cape Town’s assistance package is one of the highest in the nation, aiding around 192,500 households across the city. All residential properties valued at R5 million and under receive a R450,000 reduction in property valuation for rates calculation purposes, benefiting over 700,000 properties, which represent 80% of all properties in the city.
The City has increased the property value criteria for the Lifeline tariff from R400,000 to R500,000. Residents with a property value higher than R500,000 may still qualify for the Lifeline tariff if their monthly household income is below R7,500. Pensioners aged 60 and above, as well as individuals receiving social grants or a pension of no more than R22,000 per month, may be eligible for a rates rebate of between 10% and 100%.
Homeowners with a monthly income of R7,500 or less, owning only one property, being the full-time occupants of the home, using the home mainly for residential purposes, having inherited the house, or depending on a pension or social grant for their livelihood may qualify for indigent support.
Applicants must provide proof of identification, bank statements, bond statements, estate documents (if applicable), proof of employment, income, or pension, as well as sworn affidavits if unemployed or self-employed. Cape Town’s decision to extend the pensioner support application deadline demonstrates the city’s commitment to aiding its vulnerable residents. With an increased social support package and numerous relief options, the City strives to provide a brighter future for its pensioners and indigent households.
