On June 2nd, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis was honored during a ceremony held in Saldanha for receiving the city’s clean audit award for the 2021-22 financial year from the Auditor General (AG). This award recognizes the city’s unwavering commitment to transparency, integrity, and excellence in governance. It also demonstrates Cape Town’s focus on improving the lives of its citizens by ensuring public funds are used efficiently and effectively.

Clean Audits and Achieving the City’s Objectives

Mayor Hill-Lewis stressed the importance of clean audits in achieving the city’s objectives. He emphasized that mismanagement or corruption in public services often negatively impact the poor. By building strong institutions with good governance, Cape Town can create an environment that promotes the development and expansion of infrastructure and social safety nets.

With a budget of R70 billion for 2023-24, residents can trust that resources will be allocated towards service delivery, including a record R11 billion infrastructure budget. Furthermore, 74% of this year’s infrastructure budget will directly benefit lower-income households in Cape Town.
