Reports of threats and extortion attempts against city staff and contractors in Cape Town have surfaced recently. The incident occurred during a critical public lighting project in Eerste River last Friday. As a result, the City’s Public Lighting teams and their associates temporarily withdrew from the area, pledging to return once safety is ensured. The City of Cape Town has issued a statement denouncing the intimidation and calling on residents to support in apprehending the culprits.
The City has urged citizens to use the toll-free tip-off line to report any information that could lead to the arrest of anyone targeting city staff across the metropolitan area. The appeal was made after employees and contractors experienced threats and coercion, forcing them to abandon their duties in Eerste River. Fortunately, there were no physical injuries, but an official case has been filed at the local police station.
Councillor Beverley van Reenen, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, expressed her deep concern about the incident. She stated, “It is alarming to hear that our staff were violently threatened while carrying out a much-needed public lighting project in the community.” She acknowledged the dedication of the teams working to provide public lighting throughout the metro and lamented the violence they faced while delivering essential services to local communities.
Van Reenen also addressed the implications of such incidents on project progress, explaining, “When these incidents occur, our teams temporarily withdraw from the area and return with security or when it is safe to do so. This can result in project delays.” To mitigate this issue, she urged community members to provide information that could help bring the guilty parties to justice, condemning their actions in the strongest possible terms.
The City has established an anonymous toll-free tip-off line at 0800 110077 to encourage public cooperation. A reward of R5000 is being offered for information leading to arrests.
Apart from the negative impact on the public lighting project, the threats and extortion jeopardize the safety and wellbeing of city staff and contractors. They play a vital role in providing essential services to the community. It is imperative that the community and the authorities work together to ensure that those responsible for this reprehensible behavior are held accountable. This will allow the essential work of city staff and contractors to proceed without fear.
By fostering a spirit of cooperation and vigilance, the people of Cape Town can help create an environment where service providers can perform their duties safely and effectively. This will ensure the continued progress and prosperity of the city.
