Cape Town Welcomes Defence Forces in Freedom of Entry Parade on September 23, 2023

A Historic Event in the Mother City

Cape Town, also known as the Mother City, is set to host the prestigious Freedom of the City Entry for 11 esteemed military units from various Services and Divisions within the South African National Defence Force. This momentous event signifies the conferring of the right of entry into the city for these distinguished units.

Located on the Southern Peninsula of the Western Cape Province, Cape Town is a Category A municipality with a coastline that stretches 294 km from Gordon’s Bay to Atlantis. The city encompasses both urban and suburban areas, including Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.

Scheduled for September 23, 2023, the Freedom of Entry parade has been authorized by the Commander of the South African Armed Forces, General Rhudzani Maphwanya. Lieutenant General Lawrence Khulekani Mbatha, the Commander of the South African Landward Forces (SA Army), will assume the role of level 2 Chief Executor for this significant occasion.

Honoring Military Units in a Time-Honored Tradition

The Freedom of Entry is a long-standing tradition in which a municipality grants an honor to a military unit as a valued member of the community or as a visiting dignitary. Among the units set to receive the Freedom of Entry are the 10 Anti-Aircraft, Cape Town Highlanders, Cape Town Rifles (CLR), Nelson Mandela Artillery Regiment, and AAAR, formerly known as Cape Garrison Artillery.

The parade is set to commence at 11:00 am on September 23, 2023, in front of the iconic Cape Town City Hall on Darling Street. Distinguished attendees will include the Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, Chiefs of other services, and the Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Geordin Hill Lewis. The Executive Mayor will also serve as the primary functionary during this ceremonious event.

Understanding the crucial role of media practitioners in engaging an informed citizenry, the Defence has invited members of the fourth estate to document this significant occasion. Their efforts will ensure that the event’s significance resonates beyond the military sphere.

Strengthening Bonds and Celebrating Commitment

The Freedom of Entry parade symbolizes the enduring bond between the military and the communities they serve. It highlights the appreciation and respect these valiant units receive for their service and dedication to Cape Town and South Africa as a whole.

Historically, the Freedom of Entry has been a revered honor, reflecting the trust and confidence that a municipality places in its military units. The bestowal of this ancient tradition underscores the commitment of the South African National Defence Force to safeguard and support Cape Town’s diverse and vibrant communities.

In celebrating the Freedom of Entry, Cape Town recognizes the significant contributions made by military units in ensuring the city’s security and prosperity. The parade acts as a testament to the enduring partnership between the military and civilian communities, reinforcing shared values and aspirations for a peaceful and thriving city.

The event serves as a symbol of unity and collaboration, enabling the city and its residents to acknowledge the sacrifices made by these military units in protecting the city’s core values and inspiring future generations to engage in pursuits of service and excellence.

A Fitting Tribute in a Beautiful City

Cape Town’s rich history and stunning landscapes provide the perfect setting for the Freedom of Entry parade, illustrating the city’s dedication to honoring its military units and upholding the values of courage, loyalty, and commitment.

The parade is not only a remarkable demonstration of the strong connection between the military and the city but also a celebration of the camaraderie, resilience, and spirit that drive these units in their pursuit of excellence and devotion to Cape Town’s wellbeing.
