Cape Town Welcomes the African Netball World Cup: A Celebration of Sportsmanship

Cape Town, South Africa, is gearing up to host the first-ever African Netball World Cup. With only a week left before the tournament begins, the city has come alive with an official flag ceremony honoring all participating nations.

Flags of Unity

The Coen Steytler Roundabout, located just outside the tournament venue, is now adorned with the 16 flags of the competing countries. These vibrant symbols of unity are waving a warm welcome to the athletes and visitors alike and will remain in place until the end of the two-week-long competition.

Fierce Battles for the Coveted Title

On July 28, 2023, teams from across the globe will face off in fierce battles, each striving to claim the coveted title of Netball World Cup champions. This culmination of five years of meticulous planning and preparation has transformed the city into an exhilarating hub of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

Organizing a Successful Tournament

The local organizing committee is working closely with Cape Town’s Events Department to ensure a smooth and successful tournament. The city has doubled down on safety and security measures for the duration of the event.

Epicenter of Entertainment

The Fan Park, located on the bustling Walter Sisulu Drive, promises to be an epicenter of entertainment. It will feature Netball World Cup games on a colossal screen, exhibition matches, and live musical performances. Among the star-studded lineup are Nasty C, Simmy, Goodluck, Emo Adams, DJ Grant Lesch, and Kurt Darren, whose concert on July 26 will kick off the festivities with a bang.

Fun for All Ages

The Fan Park will also offer a plethora of activities for visitors of all ages. Children can enjoy a dedicated Kids’ Corner, complete with Jenga, a jumping castle, face painting, and giant chess. Meanwhile, adults can take in captivating cultural performances, such as Cape Town Carnival Floats, and savor delicious treats in the Food Court, which boasts outdoor seating, snacks, hot beverages, and a beer garden.

Road Closures and Alternative Routes

However, with such a grand event comes necessary adjustments. Due to the Netball World Cup and the Fan Park, several roads will be closed, and traffic flow in the CBD will be affected from July 21 to August 7, 2023. Motorists are encouraged to explore alternative routes during this time.

A Celebration of Unity, Culture, and the Indomitable Human Spirit

As Cape Town embraces this historic moment, the city’s infectious enthusiasm captures the essence of the Netball World Cup: a celebration of unity, culture, and the indomitable human spirit. The Fan Park will open daily at 7:00 am and close after the final match of the day.
