One of the calendar highlights in January is the encore performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s timeless classic, The Sound Of Music. The much-awaited revival tour of this adored musical is set to reach its grand finale at the Artscape. The last creative partnership of the legendary lyricists is brought to life by Pieter Toerien Productions and the [Cape Town](https://capetown.today/unveiling-cape-town-a-voyage-through-the-citys-enthralling-tales/) Opera. Audiences are sure to find themselves humming along to the unforgettable tunes that have touched generations, from My Favourite Things to Climb Ev’ry Mountain, and Do Re Mi to Sixteen Going On Seventeen.

An Enthralling Lineup of Performances

Directed by the discerning eye of Steven Stead, this production promises lavish sets and costumes. It sets the stage for a musical journey that unravels the compelling saga of Maria Von Trapp and the Von Trapp family, struggling with the ethical dilemmas of a Nazi-occupied Austria. A moving tribute to the human spirit’s resilience, this performance is bound to leave a profound impact on its spectators.

However, Artscape’s January program isn’t limited to the classics. Acclaimed singer-songwriter and social activist Simphiwe Dana is scheduled for a two-night performance of her emotionally charged show, MOYA. Born from personal loss and a search for tranquility, MOYA has struck a chord not only with Dana, but also with audiences, leading to sold-out shows in Johannesburg in 2022 and 2023.

Under the guidance of artistic director and choreographer Gregory Maqoma, MOYA transports its audience on a mystical voyage, blending a cappella and contemporary African dance. This performance challenges and transforms one’s understanding of life’s purpose and meaning. As Dana explains, MOYA symbolizes the ‘breath, air, spirit. The living essence inside all of life.’ This immersive experience offers an evening of spiritual connection and introspection, inviting audiences to delve into the core of our existence.

A Platform for Emerging Talent

The Artscape Theatre Centre concludes its January events with the third installment of the A Cappella Musical Festival. This community-driven initiative aims to cultivate new collaborations with the youth and local communities, tapping into the latent talent in Cape Town’s townships. The festival spotlights twelve a cappella groups, offering a stage for these gifted artists to shine.

This annual event is the innovative product of the Rainbow Arts Organisation, which was founded in 2022 in response to the passion and dedication of a cappella groups entertaining commuters in Cape Town’s taxi ranks. Recognizing this raw talent, the organization felt compelled to establish an annual platform to support and nurture these musical ensembles.

Featuring twelve a cappella groups, each comprised of between 10 and 20 musicians, the festival’s lineup includes Injongo Sweet Melodies, Unqulo, Khayelitsha Youth Choir, As One, Khayelitsha Harmonies, Brothers and Sisters Arts Organisation, Nalukhanyo Theatre Company, Amy Foundation, The New Voices, Injomane Arts Company, Thee Forest Sounds Arts Organisation, and Amahlosi Cultural Music Entertainers.

Cape Town, with its rich cultural tapestry, historic importance, and contemporary energy, offers a smorgasbord of experiences to suit all tastes. The city’s creative pulse thrums steadily at the Artscape Theatre Centre, where each performance offers an opportunity to plunge into a realm of artistic mastery.
