Cape Town, a bustling city in South Africa, has experienced a recent surge in economic growth that has led to the creation of 263,000 new jobs in the past year. According to a quarterly labor survey by StatsSA, 56,000 of those jobs were added in the most recent quarter alone, resulting in a 7% year-on-year decrease in the city’s unemployment rate.
Cape Town’s mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, attributes this significant progress to the city’s focus on infrastructure investment, efforts to combat loadshedding, and proactive measures to facilitate business. The city has seen five consecutive quarters of positive job growth and has the lowest unemployment rate among all metros.
Cape Town’s labor absorption rate, which measures the percentage of employed working-age population, has surpassed pre-Covid levels. This indicates a recovery of the labor market and sustained expansion.
James Vos, the Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, credits Cape Town’s investment promotion and skills development program for making significant strides in various industries. The program has generated billions of rands in investments and produced thousands of jobs for the city’s residents.
