Cape Town’s Informal Sector Summit & Expo 2023: Growing and Sustaining the Informal Economy

Registration for the 2023 Informal Sector Summit & Expo is now open, hosted by the City of Cape Town to promote the growth and sustainability of the informal economy. The Economic Growth Directorate is responsible for organizing the event, which aims to transform Cape Town into a City of Hope. The summit highlights the significance of the informal economy in providing essential goods, services, and livelihoods to local communities.

Objectives

The event provides a platform for discussing policy formulation, strategic intervention, infrastructure planning, stakeholder management, and governance related to informal traders. The 2023 summit is broadening its scope by involving food system stakeholders and other participants from the informal sector. The summit aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Engage with informal sector stakeholders on strategic matters related to the development and growth of the informal economy.
  • Foster closer relations with informal sector stakeholders to realize Cape Town’s vision of becoming a City of Hope.
  • Position the informal economy as an economic growth opportunity for all citizens of Cape Town.

Breakaway Sessions

Stakeholders from each subsector will have the opportunity to address issues affecting them directly through a series of breakaway sessions. These focused discussions aim to facilitate the exchange of ideas and foster collaboration among attendees.

City’s Support

Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, highlights the significance of the informal economy in sustaining livelihoods and providing goods and services to consumers and communities. The City of Cape Town is committed to nurturing growth by investing in trading infrastructure, capacity building, and market management. The Informal Economy Summit and Expo is one such initiative designed to provide a supportive platform for informal traders and stakeholders.
