Registration for the 2023 Informal Sector Summit & Expo is now open, hosted by the City of Cape Town to promote the growth and sustainability of the informal economy. The Economic Growth Directorate is responsible for organizing the event, which aims to transform Cape Town into a City of Hope. The summit highlights the significance of the informal economy in providing essential goods, services, and livelihoods to local communities.
The event provides a platform for discussing policy formulation, strategic intervention, infrastructure planning, stakeholder management, and governance related to informal traders. The 2023 summit is broadening its scope by involving food system stakeholders and other participants from the informal sector. The summit aims to achieve the following objectives:
Stakeholders from each subsector will have the opportunity to address issues affecting them directly through a series of breakaway sessions. These focused discussions aim to facilitate the exchange of ideas and foster collaboration among attendees.
Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, highlights the significance of the informal economy in sustaining livelihoods and providing goods and services to consumers and communities. The City of Cape Town is committed to nurturing growth by investing in trading infrastructure, capacity building, and market management. The Informal Economy Summit and Expo is one such initiative designed to provide a supportive platform for informal traders and stakeholders.
The 2023 Informal Economy Summit & Expo will be held on June 13, 2023, at City Hall, located on Darling Street, Cape Town, with the entrance via Corporation Street.
