In response to high levels of youth unemployment, the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate and Corporate Services Directorate have launched an 18-month full-time Learnership Programme to train and provide young candidates with valuable skills. The aim is to recruit and train 1,000 candidates in two key areas: Traffic Services and the Metro Police Department.
The recruitment process is designed to be thorough and comprehensive, including written and physical assessments, interviews, medical assessments, criminal background checks, and driver’s evaluations. The candidates have undergone these assessments and evaluations as part of the application process.
The Learnership Programme focuses on developing skills that not only equip young participants with employable skills but also enable them to serve their communities and contribute to the safety and well-being of Cape Town’s residents. Upon completion of the program, the participants will possess skills that significantly enhance their employability within the City’s various departments.
The Youth of Cape Town have shown excitement and enthusiasm towards the program, reflecting their dedication to serve and protect their fellow citizens. Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, expressed his excitement about the interest shown by the youth in law enforcement careers.
The Learnership Programme is offered in collaboration with the City’s Education and Training Development Department within Corporate Services. Alderman Theresa Uys, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, welcomes the program as an opportunity for young individuals to gain training and potentially join the workforce in the City.
The joint effort by the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate and Corporate Services Directorate represents a promising step towards empowering the youth, strengthening public safety, and creating a more thriving and secure future for all residents of Cape Town. It is part of the cornerstone of Corporate Services in building a City of Hope.
