On Monday, 08 May 2023, a cash-in-transit heist occurred in the Waterberg District of Limpopo, South Africa. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the two suspects involved in the robbery. The incident took place at the R33-Marble Hall Settlers T junction around 18:30.
According to eyewitness reports, the driver of the cash-in-transit vehicle came to a stop at the T-Junction, intending to turn towards Marble Hall. Suddenly, a silver-grey Fortuner pulled up from Settlers Road, blocking the cash-in-transit vehicle. Two armed assailants emerged from the Fortuner and opened fire on the security guards inside the cash-in-transit vehicle.
Despite sustaining damage to their tires from the gunfire, the cash-in-transit vehicle’s driver managed to continue driving towards Marble Hall. Eventually, the vehicle came to a stop, and the driver and crew were forced to abandon it and flee into the nearby bushes for safety.
Shortly after the crew had fled, the cash-in-transit truck was blasted and caught fire. It is not yet clear whether the perpetrators made off with any money. A single bag was discovered near the road, but it is not known if it contained any cash. Fortunately, no injuries occurred during the incident.
In a potentially related event, a van was found ablaze on the same road not far from the crime scene. The connection to the heist remains uncertain, and authorities are continuing their investigation.
Limpopo’s Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police, Major General Jan Scheepers, has urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could aid in apprehending the suspects. “These criminal elements have no regard for human life; they must be arrested to face the full might of the law,” stated Major General Scheepers.
Individuals with information that could lead to the capture of the suspects are encouraged to contact Lt Col Justice Ngobeni at 082 565 8326, call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, visit the nearest police station, or use the MySAPS App. The police investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
