Celebrating 25 Years of China-South Africa Diplomatic Relations: A Journey of Friendship and Cooperation

In 2022, South Africa and China will celebrate their 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations, marking a milestone in their partnership. This journey has been defined by mutual respect and shared goals, with China’s unwavering support during South Africa’s struggle for democracy being a significant part of their shared history.

A Valued Friend and Developmental Partner

China has remained a valued friend and developmental partner to South Africa, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, where they provided personal protective equipment, vaccines, and debt relief to several African countries. China’s commitment to assisting South Africa in addressing energy challenges has also been evident through the donation of emergency power equipment and a grant worth approximately R500 million.

A Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

The partnership between China and South Africa has evolved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, anchored by 10-Year Strategic Programmes of Cooperation. The programs enable both countries to pursue common goals, such as economic growth, development, and prosperity for the Global South.

High-level Cooperation in Various Sectors

High-level cooperation between China and South Africa spans various sectors, including international politics, trade, investment, infrastructure development, science, innovation, and education. Both countries share a commitment to low-carbon, climate-resilient development in the energy sector.

Strengthening Bilateral Relationships

In-person engagements, such as the Strategic Dialogue in Beijing and the High-Level People-to-People Exchange Mechanism in Cape Town, have resumed, and the Binational Commission is scheduled for November 2022. These meetings illustrate the ongoing commitment to strengthening their bilateral relationship.

Exponential Growth in Trade

Trade between South Africa and China has experienced exponential growth, with South Africa becoming China’s largest trading partner in Africa. There is a desire to narrow the trade deficit and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Development Cooperation and Infrastructural Projects

Development cooperation between China and South Africa remains strong, with South Africa drawing inspiration from China’s common prosperity strategy. Infrastructural development projects, such as small harbors development and the flagship uMzimvubu Water Development project, have made significant progress.

Shared Views on Global Governance

Both nations share similar views on BRICS membership expansion and the importance of BRICS in promoting global governance reform, multilateralism, and cooperation. The Africa-China Leaders’ Roundtable offers an excellent opportunity to further expand collaboration in areas such as agriculture, manufacturing, new energy, and the digital economy.

Confronting Challenges Together

As South Africa and China look towards the future, they will continue to face various challenges. By deepening their partnership and transforming these challenges into opportunities, both nations can work towards achieving a shared future and unlocking the potential of all peoples.
