The Basic Education Minister, Ms. Angie Motshekga, revealed some impressive data on Thursday that indicated a promising trajectory in the age profile of NSC exam candidates. The aggregate count of candidates, including full-time and part-time, in 2023 was 897,775. Among these, 88.2% of full-time candidates and 47.8% of part-time candidates were aged between 16 to 20 at the time of enrollment. The NSC pass rate has been on a consistent upward curve for the past decade, vaulting from 60% in 2009 to over 80% in recent years.
The academic performance displayed by the Free State province was nothing short of extraordinary. It surfaced as one of the top three performers, claiming the highest pass rate of 89%. KwaZulu-Natal followed with an admirable 86.4% pass rate. Gauteng stood as the third-best performer, showcasing an 85.4% pass rate. In addition, 26.1% of girls and 28.6% of boys achieved Diploma passes, and 14.8% of girls and 14.6% of boys received Higher Certificate passes. Notably, a remarkable 64% of all distinctions were attained by the girls.
