Celebrating Long Service Achievements in Cape Town’s Safety and Security Departments

On July 12, 2023, the Cape Town Civic Centre hosted an event to celebrate the long service achievements of 238 staff members from various departments within the Safety and Security Directorate. The event recognized the dedication of employees from the Disaster Risk Management Centre, Traffic Service, Fire and Rescue Service, Metro Police and Law Enforcement Departments, and the Events Department, who committed their invaluable experience to serving the residents of Cape Town.

Marking Significant Milestones in Careers

Out of the 238 recipients, 86 have officially joined the prestigious “20+ club,” marking a significant milestone in their careers. The longest-serving staff members, Edmund Leeman of the Disaster Risk Management Centre and Metro Police’s Raymond Arnold, both boast an impressive 44 years of service. Metro Police Chief Wayne Le Roux is also in the “40+ club” with 41 years of service.

The Fire and Rescue Service led with the most long service recipients, with 85 staff members acknowledged, including 14 individuals with over 40 years of service. Meanwhile, the Traffic Service awarded long service certificates to 66 staff members, showcasing the unwavering dedication and perseverance of employees in these departments.

Gratitude for Service

Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, expressed his gratitude to all the staff who received these awards. He praised their commitment, dedication, and perseverance, as well as their ability to lead by example for new staff members joining the ranks. As the Safety and Security Directorate expands, the guidance and experience of long-serving staff members are crucial in maintaining the safety of Cape Town’s residents.

Acknowledging Invaluable Contributions

The staff in these departments often face dangerous situations to protect and serve the public, and it is essential to pause and acknowledge their invaluable contributions. The long service awards represent more than just years on the job; they speak to the depth and experience of employees within the City of Cape Town. This wealth of experience is critical as the city works towards a safer future for its residents.

Investing in Safety and Security

As Cape Town continues to grow and develop, it’s necessary to invest in the safety and security of its communities. By celebrating the achievements of long-serving staff members and recognizing their dedication, the city strengthens its commitment to providing a safe environment for all residents. The long service awards not only acknowledge individual accomplishments but also remind the public of the crucial role that the Safety and Security Directorate plays in maintaining the well-being of Cape Town.

Essential Contributions

The event at the Cape Town Civic Centre serves as an important reminder that the city’s safety relies on the hard work, dedication, and perseverance of its public servants. As the Safety and Security Directorate evolves, the guidance and experience of these long-serving staff members will be integral in shaping the city’s safety strategies and ensuring the protection of its residents. The contributions of these individuals are essential in building a safer, more resilient Cape Town.
