Celebrating the Exceptional Performance of South African Special Olympics Athletes in Berlin

The athletes of Team South Africa, who participated in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Berlin, Germany, received a hero’s welcome upon their return home. They won an impressive 49 medals, including 22 gold, 20 silver, and seven bronze, across various sporting codes. Against 7,000 athletes from 180 nations, their triumph was a noteworthy feat, underscoring their dedication and skill.

Stellar Performance at National Summer Games

The South African team earned their place in the World Summer Games through their exceptional performance at the 2022 Special Olympics South Africa National Summer Games in Limpopo. Over three days, these talented athletes demonstrated their skills in eight sports: athletics, aquatics, basketball, boccie, football, futsal, netball, table tennis, and ten-pin bowling. The team comprised 64 athletes and 21 coaches representing various regions across South Africa.

A Testament to Hard Work and Perseverance

The athletes of Team South Africa forged strong bonds within the global Special Olympics community, consisting of approximately 3,000 coaches and 20,000 volunteers from 190 countries. The Democratic Alliance (DA) released a statement congratulating the team and acknowledging their accomplishments, which brought immense pride and joy to the nation.

The DA highlighted that the athletes’ medals serve as a testament to their hard work, determination, and perseverance, showcasing not only their individual talent but also South Africa’s potential in the field of sports. The political party emphasized the importance of prioritizing the growth and advancement of South African sportsmen and women, urging the Department of Sports, Art, and Culture to take action.

Deputy Minister Mafu welcomed the Special Olympics South Africa team at OR Tambo International Airport, accompanied by Minister Dlamini Zuma, Bogopane Zulu, and Dr. Phosa.
