June holds a significant meaning in South Africa as it marks the 47th anniversary of the Soweto uprising, where the youth made immense sacrifices in the fight for freedom. To honor this legacy, the North West Department of Public Works and Roads is celebrating Youth Month with the beneficiaries of the National Youth Service Programme (NYSP).
The two-day celebration led by Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, the MEC for Public Works and Roads, aims at empowering the young participants with essential skills and knowledge. Three hundred out of the 971 NYSP beneficiaries from across the province will be a part of this event. The participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with organizations such as the Department of Social Development, Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA).
The first day of the celebration will involve Gaoage Molapisi and some of the NYSP beneficiaries working together on a road maintenance project. The project will include pothole patching and road marking in partnership with the JB Marks Local Municipality. This hands-on experience will give the youth the opportunity to learn valuable skills in public works and contribute to their community’s well-being.
The second day of the event will be centered around entrepreneurship and skills development. MEC Molapisi will deliver a keynote address to the 300 beneficiaries, who will also benefit from various exhibitions organized by collaborating stakeholders. These exhibitions aim to provide guidance on opportunities and support available for aspiring entrepreneurs and skilled professionals. Additionally, the beneficiaries will receive Business Management Training, further equipping them for success in their chosen career paths.
Investing in the youth and providing them with the necessary tools to thrive in today’s competitive job market is crucial. Empowering the youth to become successful entrepreneurs and professionals not only ensures their individual success but also contributes to the overall growth and development of the nation.
