The City of Cape Town has launched a Festive Season Waste Awareness Programme to tackle the increase in litter on beaches during the holiday season. The Public Awareness, Communication and Education (PACE) Team, along with their anti-litter mascot, Bingo, will visit ten major beaches throughout December to educate the public about environmental responsibility through fun activities and gentle reminders. Alderman Grant Twigg urges visitors to respect the beaches and recreational areas by properly disposing of waste. The programme serves as a reminder to enjoy the city’s natural beauty while preserving it for future generations.
In Cape Town, December marks the end of the school year and the start of a festive season filled with beach visits and outdoor celebrations. Unfortunately, this also means an increase in litter on the city’s beaches. To tackle this problem, the City’s Public Awareness, Communication and Education (PACE) Team has launched an innovative Festive Season Waste Awareness Programme, which aims to educate the public while making the experience enjoyable.
Through this programme, the PACE team and their anti-litter mascot, Bingo, plan to visit ten major beaches across Cape Town during the school holidays. Their mission is to discourage littering through fun activities and gentle reminders of environmental responsibility. Participants can expect a lively programme of enjoyable games and activities, such as volleyball with Bingo and music and dance sessions. The “Spot the Bingo bin” challenge is an additional highlight that raises awareness about the proper use of bins while keeping the atmosphere light and festive.
Alderman Grant Twigg, the Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, has called on visitors to have fun while also respecting the beaches and recreational areas. He emphasizes the importance of properly disposing of waste in Bingo bins, stating that this will ensure a summer to remember for all the right reasons.
The PACE team’s itinerary includes visits to Camps Bay Beach, St James Beach, Lagoon Beach, Big Bay Beach, Blouberg Beach, Strand Beach, Hout Bay Harbour Beach, and Muizenberg. The visits will take place throughout December 2023, with each visit running from 10:00 to 15:00. In January 2024, the team will return to Lagoon Beach, Big Bay Beach, and Blouberg Beach for additional visits during the same times.
