City’s Safety and Security Portfolio Committee Commends Exceptional Enforcement Performance

The City’s Safety and Security Portfolio Committee recently commended the outstanding enforcement performance achieved in the past financial year. The Directorate has achieved several predetermined goals, including proactive prevention patrols, technological investments, budget expenditure, and staff training and development programs.

Testament to Remarkable Progress

The performance indicators achieved by the Directorate serve as a testament to the remarkable progress made in operational directives, service delivery, and enforcement initiatives. The Portfolio Committee also monitors budgetary spending, project implementation, and staffing matters such as employee training and vacancies.

Role of Portfolio Committee

The Portfolio Committee’s role is to hold the Directorate’s leadership accountable for executing annual plans, allocating resources effectively, and maintaining a workforce that upholds service standards. Councillor Mzwakhe Nqavashe, the Portfolio Committee Chairperson, emphasized that while the focus is often on the enforcement officers, there is a vast internal operation that guides the enforcement output visible to the public.

Standout Performance Indicators

Several standout performance indicators emerged in the 2022/23 financial year. The successful integration of drone technology proved to be a game-changer, with 930 flights conducted by the Metro Police Department through a contractually appointed service provider. These flights were carried out for both planned and emergency incidents across the city.

Well-Established Performance Indicators

Councillor Nqavashe explained that the Directorate has a variety of well-established performance indicators, which continuously evolve with new initiatives, technology, and methods. These indicators ensure accountability and demonstrate that the Directorate is fulfilling its promises.

Acknowledging Contributions

The Portfolio Committee acknowledged the contributions of the city’s numerous enforcement partners, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and neighborhood watch groups that significantly contribute to the city’s crime-fighting efforts.

Continued Growth and Innovation

The City’s Safety and Security Portfolio Committee’s recognition of the remarkable enforcement performance highlights consistent advancements in operational directives, service delivery, and enforcement initiatives. The integration of new technologies and collaborative efforts with external partners has played a crucial role in the success of the Directorate’s crime-fighting endeavors. These achievements serve as a foundation for continued growth and innovation in safety and security measures, ultimately benefiting the citizens.
