The city of Cape Town is embarking on an exciting journey to create a local spatial development framework (LSDF) for the Gordon’s Bay Development Area (GBDA) in the Helderberg District. To involve residents and stakeholders in the decision-making process, the city authorities are hosting a public workshop on August 22, 2023.
The GBDA is one of the city’s largest vacant land expanses, situated between the N2 highway and Sir Lowry’s Pass Road. The ongoing process offers a golden opportunity for residents to participate in shaping the development vision for this strategically significant area. Alderman Eddie Andrews, Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, has emphasized the importance of public involvement in the planning process.
The workshop is scheduled for August 22, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Strand Town Hall in Piet Retief Street, Strand. It will provide a platform for city officials and residents to address pressing concerns, brainstorm ideas, identify challenges, and work collaboratively on proposing viable solutions. Alderman Andrews believes that local residents, with their first-hand experience and knowledge, are best suited to contribute to the LSDF process, ensuring that the development aligns with the community’s vision and needs.
The LSDF is a crucial tool for determining the development vision of an area at the local level. As it guides land use and development decisions, it plays a pivotal role in defining the future appearance and character of a neighborhood. The GBDA encompasses areas like Vlakteplaas and Firlands, with immense development potential on the horizon.
The planned LSDF must also consider several factors, such as population growth pressures, the upgrade of the Sir Lowry’s Pass River corridor, and the realignment of the N2 freeway bordering the GBDA. The city aims to strike a balance between addressing development needs and preserving the unique attributes of the area. Collaborating with residents and stakeholders is essential in achieving this objective and ensuring the protection of the natural environment.
Interested parties can gather more information on the workshop and the LSDF process by emailing GBDA_LSDF@capetown.gov.za, visiting the Subcouncil 8 offices, or accessing the city’s online resources at https://bit.ly/3Jz7rem. Following the workshop, public contributions will be incorporated into the draft LSDF, which will be advertised for public comment and further refinement.
The finalized LSDF for the GBDA will build upon the spatial development guidelines outlined in the Helderberg District Spatial Development Framework. This higher-order spatial plan encompasses the greater Helderberg area and will serve as a foundation to guide the future growth and development of the region.
As the city of Cape Town collaborates with residents and stakeholders in drafting the LSDF for the GBDA, the upcoming workshop on August 22, 2023, promises to be a milestone event. Local residents are encouraged to attend and play an active role in this significant process, which will impact the future of their community. Join hands with the city to shape the destiny of the Gordon’s Bay Development Area by marking your calendars and attending the workshop.
