Who was S’miso Nkwanyana and what was his legacy in South Africa?

S’miso Nkwanyana was a South African visionary who dedicated his life to advocating for a fair and equal South Africa. His work in transforming the financial sector, education, and politics continues to inspire us today, even after 20 years since his tragic passing. As the youngest Provincial Secretary of the South African Communist Party in KwaZulu-Natal, Nkwanyana understood the significance of student activism in shaping society and was committed to the fight for socialism and the liberation of all people from class oppression and exploitation.

A Tribute to a South African Visionary

Today, we assemble to honor the life and legacy of S’miso Nkwanyana, a prominent figure in South African education and politics. As the youngest Provincial Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) in KwaZulu-Natal, Nkwanyana dedicated his life to advocating for a fair and equal South Africa. His work in transforming the financial sector, education, and politics continues to inspire us today, even after 20 years since his tragic passing.

From his modest start as a student leader, Nkwanyana understood the significance of student activism in shaping our society. His unwavering commitment to the fight for socialism and the liberation of all people from class oppression and exploitation has left a lasting impact on our nation. Today, we honor his memory and pledge to advance his vision for a more just and equal South Africa.

Examining South Africa’s Political Landscape

As we look back on Nkwanyana’s life, we recognize the tremendous obstacles he encountered in his pursuit of change. At only 27 years old, he was appointed as a peace negotiator during the KwaZulu-Natal political crisis of 1999, demonstrating his exceptional leadership skills and the trust placed in him. This appointment emphasized the potential for youth involvement in conflict resolution and the necessity of fresh perspectives in addressing intricate political challenges.

The Tripartite Alliance, composed of the African National Congress (ANC), the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), and the SACP, has been the driving force behind South Africa’s metamorphosis from an apartheid society to a democracy. The SACP’s long-standing dedication to social justice, equality, and the rights of the working class has played a crucial role in this transformation.

The Importance of Education and Training in South Africa

Nkwanyana’s zeal for education reform led him to serve as the Chairperson of the UNISA Subcommittee on Education Transformation in 1996. He devoted himself to establishing a non-sexist, non-racial, working-class-centric, and democratic education system. While we have made progress in increasing access to higher education and diversifying our institutions, we acknowledge the ongoing challenges and inequalities that remain.

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

One of our greatest accomplishments in higher education is the NSFAS, an initiative that has empowered numerous students who might otherwise have been denied access to education due to financial limitations. With a current annual budget of R47.7 billion, NSFAS not only offers financial assistance but also lays the groundwork for a brighter future for many young South Africans. This commitment to ensuring that education serves as a catalyst for social mobility has disrupted intergenerational poverty in numerous families.

Training and Employment Opportunities

Our Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) have created a wealth of opportunities for learnerships, internships, and TVET placements, with a total investment of over R3.2 billion in the last fiscal year. These opportunities assist in bridging the gap between education and employment for many young South Africans.

Overcoming Challenges at UNISA

UNISA, the institution that Nkwanyana relentlessly championed, is currently facing significant challenges concerning its strategic direction, academic outcomes, governance, and leadership. As the oldest university in South Africa and our largest university, we cannot allow UNISA to fail. We are dedicated to intervening and ensuring the stability and transformation of this esteemed institution in honor of Nkwanyana’s memory.

A Message to Students and Youth Leaders

Nkwanyana’s spirit endures through the ongoing efforts of student and youth leaders who, like him, are at the vanguard of promoting change and advancing social justice. We encourage today’s youth to follow his example of dedication, determination, and unwavering commitment to creating a better future for all South Africans. In Nkwanyana’s words, “our struggle requires a generational mix and not generational displacement – a mix of youth energy together with wisdom and experience!”

Collectively, we can honor the legacy of S’miso Nkwanyana by continuing to fight for a just and equal South Africa.
