Concerns Over Rising Road Fatalities in Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga

Transport Minister Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga has expressed her deep concern over the surge in road fatalities in South Africa. Two tragic car accidents were recently reported, claiming several lives, which has raised alarm bells.

Two Fatal Car Accidents

The first incident occurred on Monday, 26 June 2023, in Mqanduli, Eastern Cape, while the second one took place on R555 Witbank/Ogies Road, Mpumalanga on Tuesday, 27 June 2023. Both accidents resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives. The Eastern Cape accident led to the passing of eight passengers, while six people lost their lives in the Mpumalanga car crash.

Minister’s Condolences

Chikunga conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, and she extended her wishes for a speedy recovery for those injured in these unfortunate events.

Guidelines for Road Users

Moving violations and human error have consistently been identified as the leading causes of road accidents in the region. Consequently, Chikunga has urged road users to take necessary precautions and adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Obey the speed limit.
  2. Ensure vehicle and driver fitness.
  3. Rest every 200km or every two hours.
  4. Do not overtake on barrier lines.
  5. Buckle up.
  6. Refrain from drinking and driving.

Call for Action

In light of these incidents, Chikunga has called on Traffic Law Enforcement Officers to hold accountable those who fail to adhere to the rules of the road. She has also instructed the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to lead investigations into these two crashes and provide her with an investigative report in due course.

Responsibility for Road Safety

The issue of road safety is not just limited to Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga. It is a matter of national concern that requires collective effort and awareness. The government, in association with various organizations, has been working to identify the causes of road accidents and develop effective strategies to curb the rising number of fatalities.

While the government plays a pivotal role in ensuring road safety, the responsibility also lies with individual road users. Drivers should maintain their vehicles in good working condition and ensure their own fitness. Additionally, they should prioritize road safety by following traffic rules and avoiding risky behaviors such as texting while driving and driving under the influence. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists should also take necessary precautions to ensure their safety on the road.

Safer Road Environment

As the issue of road safety gains prominence, it is crucial for both the government and citizens to work together to reduce fatalities. By adhering to traffic rules, raising awareness, and holding accountable those who endanger lives, South Africa can move towards a safer and more responsible road environment.
