The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has expressed disapproval of the suspended Denel Dynamics CEO, Mr. Sello Ntsihlele’s attempts to disrupt attention from his ongoing internal disciplinary process. Ntsihlele has made unfounded allegations against Minister Pravin Gordhan and the department, trying to involve them in the matter.
Denel Dynamics is under a state-owned enterprise (SOE) that has faced corruption and state-capture issues. Despite Ntsihlele’s attempts, the disciplinary process remains within the jurisdiction of the Denel board. The board is expected to carry out their duties without interference and focus on stabilizing the organization.
Recognized as a strategic national security and industrial asset, Denel has received the DPE’s support through various initiatives aimed at strengthening the SOE, refining its strategic focus, and ensuring it has necessary human resources to implement its turnaround plan.
In the 2022/23 fiscal year, Denel submitted a detailed plan with a realistic business case and strategic objectives. To support Denel’s restoration of strategic and sovereign capabilities, the Minister of Finance announced a recapitalization of R3.4 billion in his October 2022 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement.
With the recapitalization, Denel can fully execute its turnaround plan, assisting the Department of Defence (DOD) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in securing the nation’s strategic defence and supply of defence capabilities. In addition to the ongoing disciplinary process, the Denel board has initiated the process of appointing a Group CEO and CFO – positions vacant for over two years.
Encouragingly, Denel’s order book for the 2023/24 financial year is substantial, standing at R18.37 billion. Furthermore, expected total sales are projected to reach R2.08 billion, a significant increase from the R1.08 billion in the 2022/23 fiscal year.
In summary, the Department of Public Enterprises remains committed to the disciplinary process of the suspended Denel Dynamics CEO, despite his attempts to divert attention from the matter. The DPE continues to support Denel in its efforts to strengthen its strategic focus and implement its turnaround plan, ultimately benefiting the nation’s security and defence capabilities.
